How this tool works.

Unit contribution = selling price − variable cost per unit. Break-even units = ceiling(fixed costs / unit contribution). Break-even revenue = rounded-up units × selling price.

A worked example

Put it into practice.

With fixed costs of 1,000, price of 40 and variable cost of 12, unit contribution is 28. You need 36 whole units, giving break-even revenue of 1,440.

What if variable costs exceed the selling price?

Each extra sale has nonpositive contribution, so no finite sales quantity covers positive fixed costs in this model. The result explains that the price or cost structure must change.

How is this result calculated?

Unit contribution = selling price − variable cost per unit. Break-even units = ceiling(fixed costs / unit contribution). Break-even revenue = rounded-up units × selling price.
